Connected and Reusable Autoinjectors Gain Momentum as Smart Drug Delivery Moves Into the Home
PRESS RELEASE | Global Data Route Analytics | September 2026
Reusable autoinjector systems are the fastest-growing device category at a 14.69% CAGR and autoinjectors with integrated connectivity the fastest-growing connectivity configuration at 14.94% CAGR to 2035, according to a new Global Data Route Analytics study.
The single-use plastic autoinjector still generates 97.1% of market revenue, but the growth is elsewhere. Global Autoinjectors Market Size, Share, Trends & Forecast 2020–2035, published by Global Data Route Analytics, finds that reusable autoinjector systems are the fastest-growing device-reusability category at a 14.69% CAGR, and that autoinjectors with integrated connectivity outpace every other connectivity configuration at a 14.94% CAGR, reaching USD 723.92 Million by 2035, with external add-on and companion connectivity adding a further USD 823.57 Million at 14.23%. The overall market grows from USD 13,451.97 Million in 2025 to USD 48,029.60 Million by 2035.
The report quantifies five reusable architectures separately: reusable autoinjectors with user-loaded standard syringes, with drug-specific prefilled syringes, with disposable single-dose prefilled cartridges (the fastest of the five at 14.86% CAGR), reusable electromechanical autoinjectors with multidose cartridges, and reusable electromechanical devices with single-dose dual-chamber reconstitution cartridges. Electromechanical and compressed-gas drive mechanisms are quantified alongside spring-driven devices.

Circularity Becomes a Platform Strategy
Sustainability has moved from ESG reporting into product architecture. Ypsomed launched YpsoLoop in October 2025 as the first autoinjector platform designed for circularity, winning the CPHI Pharma Award 2025. Owen Mumford's EcoSafe Companion applies the same logic to prefilled-syringe-based devices. Gerresheimer and Portal Instruments expanded their collaboration in September 2025 to commercialise the PRIME Nexus reusable, connected electromechanical autoinjector, tested with viscosities to 600 cP, a threshold that spring-driven devices cannot reach.
Connectivity Turns a Device Into a Service
- Integrated connectivity: devices such as the Phillips-Medisize Aria smart autoinjector and Ypsomed's SmartPilot capture dose time, completion and technique data at the point of injection.
- Add-on and companion connectivity: AARDEX Group, Flex and PA Consulting are profiled among companies building adherence-monitoring layers around existing devices.
- Recurring revenue: the report frames connected adherence data as a recurring service line for pharma partners and payers, not a one-off device feature.
- Programmed dosing: electronically programmed and configured dose delivery is quantified separately from syringe-fill-determined variable dosing.

Why It Matters for Pharma Partners
Reusable and electromechanical platforms solve three problems at once: the environmental burden and disposal cost of single-use architectures, the viscosity and volume limits of spring drives as biologics move to higher concentrations, and the adherence gap in unsupervised home use. The report's Porter's Five Forces and investment-scenario chapters assess how these platforms shift bargaining power between device makers and drug owners, and where capital is being deployed.
Companies Profiled
A dedicated connected and smart autoinjector chapter profiles AARDEX Group, Flex Ltd., Ypsomed, Phillips-Medisize, PA Consulting, ABCloudz, UCB and Life Sciences AIQ. A separate injectable drug-delivery and smart-device chapter covers medmix, Debiotech, Portal Instruments, Abbott / Bigfoot Biomedical, Aptar Pharma, Kindeva Drug Delivery, Union Medico, Crossject, Subcuject and PharmaJet.
