| Latest move | Chiller capacity doubling at Tognana, Italy (21 Jul 2026) |
Vertiv sells thermal management alongside critical power, racks, monitoring and services, so a data center operator can source most of the cooling chain from one vendor. Its flagship Vertiv™ 360AI offer targets AI-scale builds, and the company lists NVIDIA among its collaborators. See its in-row cooling and room cooling ranges and its guide to liquid cooling options.
In July 2026 Vertiv announced investment at its Tognana campus near Padua to double regional chiller production capacity by the end of 2026, with a large testing laboratory due in early 2027 to validate chillers working with liquid cooling at high density. It is also acquiring King Environmental Services, a Dublin-based provider of fluid management, commissioning and load testing for liquid-cooled sites. The deal, expected to close in Q4 2026, follows the 2025 PurgeRite purchase in North America and gives Vertiv a services platform on both sides of the Atlantic. Terms were not disclosed.
| Analyst view Vertiv competes on breadth and on services around the liquid loop. Fluid preparation and commissioning are where liquid-cooled sites tend to fail, and the KES and PurgeRite deals target that gap. |

| Latest move | US$4 billion capacity agreement for 2027–2029 (26 May 2026) |
Modine builds heating, cooling and ventilation systems for sectors ranging from vehicles to data centers, and its solutions portfolio reflects that spread. Its data center growth runs through Airedale by Modine, which has added an AI-based cooling control system, an explainer on coolant distribution units and an investment in liquid immersion technology.
The standout event is the long-term capacity agreement with a strategic data center customer: US$4 billion of guaranteed product supply across 2027–2029, backed by a US$165 million upfront cash payment. It follows the earlier US$180 million order win and a new manufacturing facility in India for the APAC region. Modine’s about page also notes a transition to the name Modexus Solutions, announced in September 2026.
| Analyst view Customers are paying cash in advance to reserve cooling capacity. That signals that manufacturing slots, not demand, are the scarce resource in the market. |

Strategic Positioning Matrix
To compare business models, the matrix below sorts the ten companies by cooling emphasis and by ownership structure, using the descriptions in their own websites and announcements. It is a GDRA analyst classification, not a company claim.
| AIR AND FACILITY-LED | LIQUID-FIRST | |
| BROAD GROUP / PARENT-BACKED | Platform incumbents Vertiv Carrier Modine |
Absorbed specialists Boyd (Eaton) Motivair (Schneider) Chilldyne (Daikin Applied) JETCOOL (Flex) LiquidStack (Trane) |
| INDEPENDENT SPECIALIST | Open space No independent air-led specialist among the ten |
Independent pure-plays GRC (immersion) Accelsius (two-phase, investor-backed) |
SmartArt 5: Two-by-two matrix of cooling emphasis against ownership structure. Modine is placed on the air-led side because of its Airedale product line.
The Growth Flywheel Behind the Market
The announcements in this analysis reinforce one another. Rising rack density pulls demand for liquid cooling, demand pushes suppliers to add capacity, capacity needs capital, and capital arrives through acquisitions and long-term contracts that in turn fund the next round of products.
| ↗ | 1. Rising AI density Heat loads exceed what air can remove |
↘ |
| 4. Product and service depth New CDUs, controls, commissioning |
GROWTH FLYWHEEL |
2. Liquid cooling demand CDUs, cold plates and immersion |
| ↖ | 3. Capacity and capital Plants expand; deals and prepayments fund them |
↙ |
SmartArt 6: Cycle diagram, read clockwise from the top. Arrows mark the direction of reinforcement.
How Buyers Can Evaluate a Cooling Partner
| 1 Define the load Rack density and growth plan |
2 Choose the architecture Air, direct-to-chip or immersion |
3 Check capacity Factory footprint and lead times |
4 Test integration Controls, CDUs, DCIM, chillers |
5 Plan commissioning Fluid prep, load testing, service |
SmartArt 7: Five-step evaluation path. Each step reflects a differentiator evidenced in the company profiles above.
Key Takeaways
| 1 | Capacity is the bottleneck. Modine’s US$165 million upfront payment and Vertiv’s chiller doubling in Italy both point to supply, not demand, setting the pace. |
| 2 | Ownership is shifting. Boyd, Motivair, Chilldyne and JETCOOL now sit inside Eaton, Schneider Electric, Daikin Applied and Flex, and LiquidStack inside Trane Technologies. |
| 3 | The liquid loop is broader than the cold plate. CDUs from 0.5 MW to 5 MW, fluid management and commissioning services are each becoming products in their own right. |
| 4 | Edge and retrofit matter. GRC’s 13 kW ICEraQ Nano and Chilldyne’s starter kit show vendors targeting sites that cannot rebuild around liquid. |
