India Autoinjectors Market: The Semaglutide Pen Boom, Biosimilar Autoinjectors and the Players to Watch
Market insight blog | Updated September 2026
India's autoinjector and pen-injector market changed overnight on March 20, 2026. That day, the Indian patent on semaglutide expired, and around ten Indian drug makers rushed generic versions to market in pens, vials and reusable devices. At the same time, Indian biosimilar makers are winning US approvals for autoinjector presentations, and a home-grown device industry is scaling up to supply the pens. This analysis maps ten companies shaping the market, from Biocon Biologics and Zydus to device maker Shaily Engineering Plastics.
Key takeaways
- Semaglutide went generic in India on March 20, 2026, and about ten companies launched brands within two days.
- Monthly prices now range from about $14 for a vial to $84 for a branded-generic pen, against $93 to $114 for the originator.
- Biocon Biologics won US FDA approval for a Yesintek (ustekinumab) prefilled autoinjector on August 18, 2026.
- Shaily Engineering Plastics signed an about $45 million, four-year pen-injector order and is building capacity for 80 million pens.

Why autoinjectors matter in India right now
Three forces are driving demand. First, the end of semaglutide exclusivity has turned GLP-1 injections from a premium import into a mass-market category. Nomura estimates India's semaglutide market could grow from about $168 million today to about $1.26 billion within five years, and most of that volume will be delivered by pen. Second, Indian biosimilar makers now compete abroad on device convenience, not just price, which pushes them to develop autoinjector presentations. Third, India is building its own device supply chain, so pens no longer have to be imported to reach patients at Indian prices.

The semaglutide price war
Generic launches have cut the monthly cost of semaglutide sharply. Pens sit at the top of the generic price range and vials at the bottom, which shows how much patients value the convenience of a pen.

Company analysis
Biocon Biologics Limited
Biocon Biologics is India's leading biosimilar exporter with an autoinjector story. Its ustekinumab biosimilar Yesintek was first approved by the US FDA in November 2024 and launched in the US in February 2025 (US launch release). On August 18, 2026 the FDA approved a single-dose prefilled autoinjector in 45 mg/0.5 mL and 90 mg/mL strengths, and Biocon has also received Health Canada approval for a Yesintek autoinjector pen. The autoinjector matters because eight ustekinumab biosimilars now compete in the US. More: about Biocon Biologics, Biocon Biologics home, contact, 2026 annual report, 2025 annual report.

Dharma Biologics
Dharma Biologics is a Bengaluru-based contract developer and manufacturer focused on autoinjector development. It offers integrated drug-device development, autoinjector-ready formulation work, aseptic fill-finish of syringes and cartridges with device assembly, human-factors engineering and regulatory support for combination products. That makes it a partner for drug makers that want an autoinjector without building the capability in-house. More: Dharma Biologics home, contact.
Zydus Lifesciences Limited
Zydus has made semaglutide its flagship injectable play. It planned an innovative semaglutide injection for day one of patent expiry, launched at about $23 a month, and widened its reach through a licensing deal with Torrent Pharma to co-market it and a similar agreement with Lupin (launch coverage). Zydus has also secured a US FDA nod for a scurvy injection generic; see its product range. More: about Zydus, Zydus home, contact, 2023-24 annual report, Q4 results.
Lupin Limited
Lupin is building a complex-injectables business in the US. On October 3, 2025 it launched liraglutide injection in a single-patient-use prefilled pen in the US, a generic of Victoza, whose reference product had about $350 million in annual US sales (US release). It also launched Rymti, a biosimilar etanercept, in Canada. Its PrecisionSphere long-acting injectable platform produced a risperidone long-acting injectable, and in October 2025 Lupin opened the platform to partners. It also launched glucagon for injection in the US. More: about Lupin, Lupin home, contact, 2026 financial statements, 2025 integrated report.

Five trends to watch
- The pen becomes a mass-market product. Generic semaglutide has put pen injectors in reach of millions of Indian patients.
- Price tiers by device. Disposable pens, reusable pens and vials now sell at very different prices for the same drug.
- Made-in-India devices. Shaily's ShailyPen Neo shows Indian firms can design, make and export pen injectors.
- Biosimilars add autoinjectors. Biocon's Yesintek autoinjector shows device upgrades are now part of competing abroad.
- Contract manufacturing grows. CDMOs like Dharma Biologics and Aurobindo's Eugia can make autoinjectors for others.
