Spark Plugs Market – Report Overview
The Global Spark Plugs Market was valued at USD 4,785.32 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 7,713.51 million by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 4.89% during the forecast period 2025–2035.
The spark plugs market covers the manufacturing, distribution and sale of spark plugs used mainly in gasoline internal combustion engines to ignite the air-fuel mixture. A spark plug consists of an electrode assembly, insulator, metal shell and terminal that create a controlled spark across a set gap. Spark plugs are used in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, small engines, marine, agricultural equipment and industrial engines.
Good spark plugs give reliable starting, smooth idling and steady acceleration, support fuel efficiency and help emission-control systems work properly. Iridium, platinum and fine-wire designs resist erosion and extend service intervals, and new electrode geometries, insulators and heat ranges meet the needs of high-compression, turbocharged and downsized engines. While electrification is reshaping propulsion, a huge installed base of combustion engines keeps aftermarket replacement demand strong.
Reliable Ignition
Consistent sparks for easy starts, smooth idle and acceleration.
Fuel Efficiency
Complete combustion helps engines use fuel better.
Lower Emissions
Stable ignition supports catalytic converters and emission control.
Long Service Life
Iridium and platinum plugs last far longer than nickel plugs.
Key Takeaways
- The market grows about 1.6 times, from USD 4,785.32 million (2025) to USD 7,713.51 million (2035), passing USD 6 billion in 2030.
- Iridium and double iridium plugs gain share from copper/nickel as OEMs fit long-life plugs.
- The aftermarket is the larger sales channel, driven by the aging global vehicle parc and two-wheelers.
- Hybrids, CNG/LPG and hydrogen engines extend spark plug demand even as battery-electric cars grow.
- Industry consolidation was reconsidered: DENSO agreed to transfer its spark plug business to Niterra in September 2025, but both companies ended the deal in October 2026.

Anatomy of a Spark Plug
Every spark plug has the same basic parts. High voltage from the ignition coil travels down the center electrode and jumps the gap to the ground electrode, creating the spark that ignites the fuel.

Spark Plug Electrode Material Comparison
Electrode material is the biggest factor in a plug’s price and service life. Manufacturers state that platinum plugs last up to about twice as long as nickel plugs, double platinum up to about three times, and iridium plugs roughly double the life of nickel plugs.
| Electrode Material | Service Life | Ignitability | Affordability | OE Fitment Today |
| Copper/Nickel Alloy | Low | Medium | High | Medium |
| Platinum | Medium | Medium | Medium | Medium |
| Double Platinum | High | Medium | Medium | High |
| Iridium | High | High | Low | High |
| Double Iridium | High | High | Low | High |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between hot and cold spark plugs?
The heat range describes how quickly a plug moves heat away from its tip. Hot plugs hold more heat, which helps burn off deposits in low-speed or cooler-running engines. Cold plugs shed heat faster and suit high-performance, turbocharged or high-compression engines that run hotter.
How long do iridium spark plugs last compared with copper plugs?
Iridium plugs typically last much longer than copper/nickel plugs because the hard, fine-wire iridium tip resists wear. NGK states that iridium roughly doubles service life compared with nickel plugs. Bosch states its Double Platinum plugs last up to three times longer than standard plugs.
Do hybrid vehicles use spark plugs?
Yes. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles have a gasoline engine alongside the electric motor, so they still need spark plugs. In fact, frequent engine start-stop cycles in hybrids increase the need for durable, reliable ignition, which supports demand for premium iridium plugs.
Why are spark plugs important for hydrogen and gas engines?
CNG, LPG and hydrogen engines need higher ignition voltages and more durable electrodes than gasoline engines. This creates demand for specialist plugs, such as Niterra’s LaserLine plugs for gas engines, and opens new growth areas as alternative-fuel combustion engines develop.
What happened to the DENSO and Niterra spark plug deal?
In September 2025, DENSO agreed to transfer its spark plug and exhaust gas sensor business to Niterra (NGK). In October 2026, both companies agreed to end the deal. DENSO said demand for diverse powertrains was lasting longer than expected, so it will keep running the business.
