Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is mono-material plastic packaging and why is it growing?

Mono-material packaging uses a single plastic type, such as all-PE or all-PP. Mixed-material laminates are hard to recycle, while mono-material packs fit existing recycling streams. Companies such as Amcor and Mondi now offer mono-material pouches, films and closures to meet recyclability rules.

What is PCR content in plastic packaging?

PCR (post-consumer recycled) content is plastic recovered from used packaging and processed into new material. Certifications such as RecyClass and ISCC PLUS track it through the supply chain. Examples include Mondi's re/loop FlowWrap with 35% PCR and its detergent PillowBag with 50% PCR.

How does the UK Plastic Packaging Tax affect manufacturers?

The UK taxes plastic packaging that contains less than 30% recycled content. From April 2027, only post-consumer recycled content will count toward that threshold. Producers are securing certified PCR supply, as Amcor did for its UK flexible packaging sites in June 2026.

What is the difference between mechanical and chemical recycling of plastic packaging?

Mechanical recycling sorts, washes and remelts plastic into pellets, and suits clean streams such as PET bottles and HDPE. Chemical recycling breaks plastic down into its basic building blocks, which can produce food-contact recycled PE and PP from mixed household waste. Projects such as the Danish CRISP consortium aim to scale this.

How are mergers reshaping the plastic packaging industry?

Leading companies are reshaping their portfolios. Amcor combined with Berry Global in April 2025 to form a much larger flexible and rigid packaging leader. Sonoco sold its thermoformed and flexibles business to TOPPAN and bought metal packaging maker Eviosys to focus on its core businesses.
