Mesenchymal Stem Cells Market – Report Overview
The Global Mesenchymal Stem Cells Market was valued at approximately USD 6,851.11 million in 2025 and is projected to reach approximately USD 27,357.16 million by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 14.85% during 2025–2035.
The mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) market covers the development, production, research and application of mesenchymal stem cells, a population of multipotent stromal cells that can differentiate into several connective-tissue lineages and interact with surrounding tissues through paracrine and immunomodulatory mechanisms. MSCs are sourced from bone marrow, adipose tissue, umbilical cord, placenta, dental pulp and other tissues, and the market includes MSC research materials, cell products, processing and expansion technologies, and therapeutic development across regenerative medicine, drug discovery, tissue engineering and biomedical research.
Interest in MSCs comes from their potential to support tissue repair and regeneration, and from their ability to modulate immune and inflammatory responses. This broad biological activity has pushed research into musculoskeletal conditions, cardiovascular and neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases and graft-versus-host disease, which in turn drives demand for standardized isolation, characterization, expansion, cryopreservation and analytical technologies.
Tissue Regeneration
MSCs can differentiate toward bone, cartilage and fat cells and release factors that support tissue repair.
Immunomodulation
MSCs influence inflammatory pathways and immune-cell activity, opening up autoimmune and GvHD research.
Scalable Manufacturing
Bioreactors, xeno-free media and closed systems are improving consistency and scale.
Cell-Free Approaches
MSC-derived exosomes and extracellular vesicles are a fast-growing research area.

How Mesenchymal Stem Cells Work
Mesenchymal stem cells are identified by their ability to stick to plastic in culture, by surface markers (positive for CD73, CD90 and CD105; negative for hematopoietic markers such as CD45, CD34 and CD14) and by their capacity to differentiate into three cell types. Beyond differentiation, much of their therapeutic interest comes from the signaling molecules they release.

MSC Cell Source Comparison
The tissue an MSC comes from affects how many cells can be collected, how fast they grow and how easy the donor procedure is. This is why the report segments the market by eight cell sources.
| Cell Source | Cell Yield | Proliferation Rate | Ease of Collection | Clinical Experience |
| Bone Marrow | Medium | Low | Low | High |
| Adipose Tissue | High | Medium | Medium | Medium |
| Umbilical Cord | High | High | High | Medium |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between autologous and allogeneic MSCs?
Autologous MSCs are taken from and given back to the same patient. This lowers the risk of an immune reaction, but each batch has to be made for one person. Allogeneic MSCs come from healthy donors and can be stored in cell banks as ready-to-use products. This makes them easier to scale, which is why allogeneic MSCs make up a growing share of the clinical pipeline.
Why are xeno-free and serum-free media important for MSC manufacturing?
Fetal bovine serum varies from batch to batch and can carry animal-derived contaminants. Xeno-free and serum-free media, along with human platelet lysate, give more consistent results. They also make it easier to move from research into GMP clinical manufacturing. Examples include Gibco StemPro MSC SFM XenoFree, MesenCult-ACF Plus and PLTMax.
Are there any approved mesenchymal stem cell therapies?
Yes. Approved MSC products include: Mesoblast's Ryoncil for pediatric steroid-refractory acute GvHD, approved by the US FDA in December 2024 JCR Pharmaceuticals' Temcell in Japan MEDIPOST's Cartistem in South Korea Stempeutics' Stempeucel in India
What are MSC-derived exosomes, and why are they attracting investment?
Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by MSCs that carry proteins and genetic material, and they may provide many of the cells' benefits without using live cells. Cell-free products can be easier to store, ship and standardize. For example, RoosterBio and Thermo Fisher teamed up in April 2025 to manufacture MSC exosomes.
How is bioreactor technology changing the MSC market?
Single-use stirred-tank bioreactors replace manual flask culture with closed, automated systems. They can scale from development batches up to large cGMP production runs. That improves consistency, lowers contamination risk and cuts cost per dose. Thermo Fisher launched the Gibco CTS DynaXS Single Use Bioreactor for this purpose in May 2026.
