How a Heat Exchanger Works: Counter-Flow Principle
In the most efficient arrangement, counter-flow, hot and cold fluids move in opposite directions on either side of a conductive wall (a plate or tube). Heat passes through the wall continuously, so the cold fluid can leave almost as hot as the incoming hot fluid, without the two streams ever mixing.
