1. Market Overview

The Global Sustainable Timber Plantations and Wood Products Market covers planted forests managed for wood production and the products made from them, including sawlogs, veneer logs, pulpwood, wood chips, sawn softwood and hardwood lumber, and engineered and panel products such as cross-laminated timber (CLT), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), oriented strand board (OSB), medium-density fibreboard (MDF), flooring and finger-jointed wood. These plantations are established and managed to keep forests productive over the long term while protecting soil, biodiversity, water and carbon, and the interests of surrounding communities.

Planted forests are an increasingly important source of industrial wood. An FAO analysis noted that plantations made up about 5% of global forest area but supplied about 35% of global roundwood production in 2000, and that more than half of the harvest could come from plantations by 2050. Fast-growing species such as pine, eucalyptus, acacia and poplar, together with engineered wood technologies that make use of small-diameter logs, allow plantations to supply construction, furniture, packaging and pulp markets while reducing pressure on natural forests.

Demand is supported by green building and the use of wood in place of carbon-intensive materials, growth in mass timber construction, and efforts such as the FAO-led Sustainable Wood for a Sustainable World initiative to strengthen sustainable wood value chains. Certification schemes such as FSC and PEFC, and regulations such as the EU Deforestation Regulation, are shaping how timber is sourced and traded, while debates about the reliability of certification continue.
