Market Overview

The Global Closed-Die Forgings Market was valued at USD 61,112.95 million in 2025 and is projected to reach approximately USD 154,537.20 million by 2040, expanding at a CAGR of 6.38% during 2025–2040.

Market Definition

Closed-die forging — also known as impression-die forging — is a metal-forming process in which a heated metal billet is pressed or hammered between two dies whose walls enclose the workpiece on all sides, forcing the material to flow into a pre-machined cavity that mirrors the final part shape (Britannica ↗, ScienceDirect ↗). Because the dies restrict lateral flow, only a small amount of surplus metal escapes into a flash gutter and is later trimmed; in precision, flashless variants the billet volume is matched to the finished part so almost no flash forms (ScienceDirect ↗, Bunty LLC ↗).

The process is usually performed hot to lower the force required and raise the metal's plasticity, though warm and cold routes are also used for selected shapes and materials (Bunty LLC ↗). Confining the metal in matched tool-steel dies aligns the grain flow and produces near-net-shape parts with tight tolerances, refined internal structure and superior mechanical properties, which is why the method is specified for high-load, high-volume components across automotive, aerospace, construction, mining, energy and general engineering (Walker Forge ↗).

Transvalor ↗ 2025  •  Process simulation

Process-simulation software (FORGE®) is positioned to neutralise closed-die forging's biggest drawbacks — high tooling cost and trial-and-error — by predicting underfill and flow defects on a virtual die before any steel is cut.

Market impact: Digital tooling is becoming a competitive differentiator, compressing lead times and die spend and supporting Precision forging plus Mechanical/Hydraulic-press segments.

TenderKart / GeM ↗ Apr 2026  •  Public procurement

Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), Tiruchirappalli High Pressure Boiler Plant floated a tender for machined closed-die forgings — including creep-resistant F92 boiler bodies and yokes — awarded across eight schedules to GRS Engineering and Precitech Forgings.

Market impact: Live public-sector pull from the Power Generation & Energy end-use segment in Asia Pacific, confirming demand for high-temperature alloy forgings and the role of mid-size Indian suppliers.

Walker Forge ↗ 2026  •  Capacity

The US impression-die forger runs 13 press lines from 850 to 4,000 tons, producing up to 750,000 parts a year in carbon, alloy and stainless SBQ steel for automotive, agriculture, construction, mining, military and energy customers.

Market impact: Illustrates North American mechanical-press capacity and SBQ-steel focus — a profiled competitor anchoring the Hammer/Mechanical-press and Carbon/Alloy-steel segments.

Akron Ring Forge (Millennium Rings) ↗ 2025  •  Supplier expansion

An ISO 9001 Indian forger is scaling closed-die forging across carbon, alloy and stainless steel plus aluminium, titanium, nickel and copper alloys — emphasising near-net-shape parts for aerospace, automotive, energy, construction and defence.

Market impact: Signals Asia Pacific supplier growth and multi-material capability, feeding the Automotive, Aerospace and Defense end-use segments.

Walkson ↗ 2025  •  Technical analysis

A characteristics review reiterates closed-die forging's core value — superior grain-flow strength, fatigue resistance, tight tolerances, minimal flash and high-volume efficiency — for automotive, heavy-machinery and energy components.

Market impact: Underpins the demand rationale for closed-die over casting and open-die routes, supporting Hot forging and high-volume Automotive and Heavy-Truck segments.
